Can a document stay up to date on its own?
Generation can be a step in a workflow, so a scheduled trigger can rebuild a report from current data and email it out without you touching it.
Who can see a published document?
Whoever you choose. Public documents are indexable, unlisted ones are not, and either can carry an expiry date or be revoked outright. Readers always see the exact version you published.
